Papua New Guinea first outreach team since Covid-19 global pandemic!
May 2022 update
We have so many good things to share with you!
This last month lots have been happening here in Kona, on board the ship and in Madang, PNG with the outreach team.
The PNG outreach team had a rough start on their journey to PNG. Sometimes perseverance and patience has to rise up in us, right at the doorstep of stepping out in faith!
The outreach team has 14 students and 2 staff. We love that the team has missionaries from Brazil, Switzerland, Denmark, UK, Canada and the US. All with one purpose: to bring His kingdom and tell people of the gospel and the power of Jesus's work on the cross. To bring hope and love to Papua New Guinea.
Three courageous nurses are part of this ministry effort too! Cintia, Katie and Leah. Leah also had a rough start with flight cancellations. I'm so grateful for their yes, their patience and their perseverance. Jesus is worthy of all the inconveniences. These young missionaries are proof that we don't scare easily, we look up with faith and courage in our hearts and we press onwards to do what He has called us to do!
They are doing amazing. They were praying for people in the markets and in the hospitals in Port Moresby. They were also a fresh breeze of air to the crew and volunteers on board, helping and carrying their day to day tasks together. After 2 weeks they went to Madang to support the ministry there. They have been praying for people, visiting at their houses, encouraging, sharing their testimonies on the local radio, preaching the gospel, distributing the bible in SD cards for people's phones, doing health educations in schools and villages and praying for patients who were getting their wounds tended to by our amazing nurses. Isn't it amazing? What a heart full of love for Jesus can do? Ordinary men and women are pouring out the hope in them to everyone around them. We are so moved to see them in action!
We are praying more short term teams can continue to come and keep invading this nation with love, hope and joy. They must hear of Jesus. They are not forgotten, they are valued and they matter. Praise the Lord!
I (Claudia) have been meeting with different organizations like GoCorps, to process an engineer joining us for long term missions next winter. Yay! Also, I had a great meeting with the MedSend CEO and grant manager. I will be working on an application for Ywam Ships Kona to be a sending organization to receive medical missionaries. This would open the door for medical professionals who have student debt to go to the mission field without that burden. I am always amazed at all the opportunities there are for christians to GO!
I attended a Physician Assistant Open House in Kona and hopefully we will offer volunteer opportunities to Kona future PA's to serve in Papua New Guinea.
Luis has been doing amazing with his team. For the first time in a long time he has 2 more guys on staff as part of his team. Joe and Luke. They are getting along great and they have been working on getting parts for the ship, working with the engineers on board and getting cadets and crew on board. He continues to be the soccer games organizer for the base! :) and the fishing tutor to other young men. What a blessing to see men being there for other young men. Luis is a loving, loyal friend to those around him.
I have continued to walk with a few girls on base. Praise God for friendships. He shapes us and fills us with love and blesses our hearts through each of them. We love it!
April has been a challenging month, with lots to manage on board the ship and in Madang on a daily basis and more people flying out to Papua New Guinea, which brings delays, visa requirements, denied boarding, new rules changing all the time and supporting our staff and teams to make it to the other side of the world! Through it all, God has remained faithful.
Maclau has celebrated Easter with an Egg Hunt at church. She also celebrated a Birthday of her good dog friend "Sugar" and went to the Circus with her daddy.
The purchase of the Base in Kona, Hawaii was finalized! We celebrated and dedicated the base to the Lord. Loren and Darlene Cunningham (Founders of Ywam) prayed over all Ywam Ships Kona missionaries at the Flags Plaza at the University of the Nations. For His kingdom to move forward in the Pacific!
Prayer points:
- Short term teams to come to PNG and Madang
- More long term missionaries to the ship and Madang.
- Provision for the ship expenses and dry dock.
- Provision for our family. We are praying to increase our supporters team and praying our home church renews their commitment to continue supporting us. We are also for other churches to support us.
- Upcoming doctor's appointment on June 8 (for Claudia)
Thank you so much for taking the time to read about our ministry. We hope you are encouraged. Thank you for praying for us and for being part of our family and what the Lord is doing through us. All glory to Him.
With Love,
Luis, Claudia & Maclau Choy
